Pistons and rings

Pistons

  • Oil Control: The lower rings (oil control rings) regulate the oil on the cylinder walls, ensuring sufficient lubrication while scraping excess oil back into the sump to prevent it from burning in the combustion chamber.
  • Heat Transfer: Rings also facilitate the transfer of heat from the piston to the cylinder wall, from where it’s dissipated by the engine’s cooling system.

Maintenance and Replacement

  • Wear and Tear: Over time, pistons and rings can wear down due to friction and exposure to high pressures and temperatures, leading to loss of engine efficiency, increased oil consumption, and reduced power output.
